Mastering the Express Entry

Immigration is a journey that signifies new beginnings and opportunities. When Canada is your destination, one of the primary pathways is the Express Entry system. This points-based immigration system, while offering a swift route to Canadian permanent residence, is layered with complexities. At GM Law, our seasoned immigration lawyers demystify this process, paving the way for your successful immigration to Canada.

Understanding the Express Entry System

The Express Entry system is Canada’s flagship immigration program, designed to select skilled workers for immigration to Canada. It’s an entirely electronic process involving the federal government, provincial governments, and Canadian employers.

Express Entry is a competitive system. Prospective immigrants, known as candidates, complete an Express Entry profile where they are assigned a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS score is based on factors such as age, education, language ability, work experience, and other criteria. The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency.

Deciphering the Express Entry Categories

The Express Entry system encompasses three economic immigration programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): The Federal Skilled Worker Program is geared towards skilled professionals with foreign work experience who are aspiring to gain permanent residency in Canada. Under this program, candidates are evaluated based on factors such as education, work experience, age, language proficiency, and adaptability. Those who meet the criteria of the FSWP are entered into the Express Entry pool, where they have the opportunity to be invited to apply for permanent residency.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): The Federal Skilled Trades Program is designed for individuals who are skilled in a specific trade and wish to become permanent residents of Canada. Eligible trades include, but are not limited to, industrial, electrical and construction trades, maintenance and equipment operation trades, and supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production. Similar to the FSWP, eligible candidates under the FSTP enter the Express Entry pool and may receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): The Canadian Experience Class is tailored for skilled workers who have prior work experience in Canada and wish to transition to permanent resident status. The CEC prioritizes candidates who have demonstrated their ability to integrate into the Canadian labour market through their work experience and language proficiency. Candidates eligible under the CEC are also entered into the Express Entry pool and may receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

Each of these programs has its specific requirements, and understanding which one applies to you can be challenging. That’s where GM Law steps in, offering expert advice to help you identify the right pathway to Canadian permanent residence.
